Cellulite FAQ

Q: Can you have cellulite if you are thin?
A: Yes. Since the fat can build up in areas of the body rather than throughout the body, certain areas of thin people can also experience cellulite. Any time there is a change in the balance of muscle mass and fit tissue, cellulite can become present.

Q: What are the most common types of cellulite?
A: Thanks to new technology, cellulite can now be categorized into four different types:
1. Compact Cellulite- Typically found in older women and hard to get rid of. Can be sensitive and painful, and is caused by hardening of the connective tissue.
2. Spongy or Watery Cellulite – Often inherited cellulite containing more fluid than fat.
3. Localized Cellulite – Often found in women who are slender. It is more superficial and harder to exercise away than other types of cellulite. A common occurrence is “saddlebags”.
4. Spread Cellulite – Found in thin women on the buttocks and thighs. Contains more fat than fluid.

Q: What can I do to get rid of my cellulite?
A: It all depends on the cellulite you have. Consult your physician for treatment and advice. Some types of cellulite may require nothing more than changing your diet and exercising and minimal treatment. Other types may require more focused treatments or cosmetic surgery.

Q: Why do athletes and models get cellulite?
A: Because cellulite is caused by a buildup of fat in a particular area, even athletes with little body fat can experience cellulite in places where fat deposits are present.

Q: Who should I seek for treatment of my cellulite?
A: Consulting with a physician who specializes in Aesthetic Medicine is the recommended choice for coming up with a proper solution to treating your cellulite.

Q: How come men, in general, don’t have cellulite?
A: This is mostly because of the difference in the fat tissues of men and women, as well as the presence of the female hormone not found in males.

Q: Do children have cellulite?
A: No. Anyone who has not at least gone through puberty will not have cellulite. While skin folds may be similar, the process is different.

Q: Is cellulite a circulatory problem?
A: In essence, no. While an alteration of the circulatory system could be present, it is not what causes the cellulite. What will cause the cellulite will be one of a number of predisposed conditions already present in the individual, but this has nothing to do with the circulatory system. This is why cellulite is not a circulatory problem.
